Actress/singer Alicia Witt ( IMDb page ), who came to semi-fame playing Cybill Shepherd's teenage daughter 'Zoey' on the late 1990s CBS sit-com Cybill , traveled to Washington, DC this past week, which she told the Washington Examiner was her first visit to the nation's capital since 'President Obama's inauguration, which she says made her feel more patriotic than she ever has in her life.' That gave her a 'passion' for the U.S. and it 'still gives me chills even though the darkness has sort of overcome our country again.' The paper's August 18 'Yeas & Nays' item, ' Witt... continue reading
When NBC's Andrea Mitchell, on Friday, asked Haley Barbour if Rick Perry had to "clean up his language?" the former head of the RNC brushed back the host of MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell Reports by subtly accusing her of engaging in typical liberal media tricks. The current Mississippi governor warned his fellow Republican to be prepared to be "nitpicked by the liberal media elite" because "when you are a conservative, Christian Southerner, Republican , you have to expect that." The following is the relevant exchange as it was aired on the August 19 edition of MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell Reports: ANDREA MITCHELL:... continue reading
Prompted by Newsweek 's Michele Bachmann cover picture choice , in his weekly Friday column, USA Today founder Al Neuharth, a pretty consistent liberal , recognized the magazine's political agenda. 'When Newsweek was owned by the Washington Post , it was predictably left-wing, but it was accurate,' Neuharth observed before slamming the new owner/editor who picked a picture to make Bachmann look crazy: 'Under Tina Brown, it is an inaccurate and unfair left-wing propaganda machine.' In the August 19 column, ' Newsweek Bachmann cover is outrageous ,' Neuharth explained how 'last week's cover featured a full-page, wide-eyed facial picture of... continue reading
NBC on Friday offered a light-hearted defense of Barack Obama's vacation, justifying it by pointing out how hard it is for world leaders to take trips. On Today, NBC's Savannah Guthrie implored, " Well, is there ever a good time for a world leader to take a vacation? President Obama is receiving some criticism for his summer getaway to Martha's Vineyard and he's not the only one ." Reporter Michelle Kosinski continued, "And [leaders] can't look too set up and they can't dare let their hair down too much." She joked that she enjoyed when Presidents have books on vacation,... continue reading
On Thursday, Forbes's Robert Lenzner claimed the U.S. needs a second stimulus, and CNN's financial gurus Richard Quest and Ali Velshi were content not to challenge his point. Velshi even acknowledged later that the country needs to "stimulate employment" through tax benefits to small businesses. "What we really need, but unfortunately we're politically behind the eight-ball is, we need an enormous stimulus program of say, $200 billion to put to work all these people from the construction trades and building and real estate that are out of work," Lenzner insisted. [Video below.] However, both Lenzner and co-host Richard Quest admitted... continue reading
New York Times reporter Ashley Parker's profile of Texas Gov. Rick Perry on the campaign trail in New Hampshire portrayed a more cautious and subdued candidate, days after Perry's claim that actions taken by Ben Bernanke, the chairman of the Federal Reserve, were potentially 'treasonous,' a remark that offended the delicate sensibilities of Times reporter Binyamin Appelbaum, who found it simply ' horrifying .' Parker's Thursday piece from New Hampshire, ' Day After Fed Uproar, Perry Tones It Down ," featured six paragraphs on an exchange on global warming between Perry and N.H. citizen Jim Rubens, described by Parker as... continue reading
On Wednesday's NBC Today, co-host Matt Lauer teased an upcoming segment on unemployment by fretting: "And just ahead, help not wanted. If you're one of the 14 million Americans looking for work, you may have noticed a growing trend. Employers are posting job ads that say they're seeking only people who are currently employed or just recently laid off. Is that discrimination?" Later, Lauer asked Today financial editor Jean Chatzky about the practice: "This sounds like discrimination, job discrimination to me. Why isn't it?" Chatzky had to explain the legal definition of discrimination to Lauer: "It isn't because the test... continue reading
According to Good Morning America's Jim Avila, Rick Perry "does not care" about the "overwhelming scientific evidence" of global warming. The ABC reporter on Thursday offered a hostile, condescending take on the Texas Governor. Avila used odd language to explain that the Texas Governor "has a close relationship with guns, carries one while jogging. " Rather than mention the state's record of job creation , Avila lectured, "Rick Perry's Texas pours more greenhouse gas into the atmosphere than any other state in the country and in the campaign trail, yesterday, perhaps we found out why." [MP3 audio here. ] According... continue reading
CNN's Jessica Yellin used a recent CNN poll Tuesday to give credence to the White House spin that President Obama is the victim of a bad economy he inherited from Bush. What Yellin failed to report was another CNN poll showing that Americans almost two-to-one disapprove of Obama's handling of the economy. Yellin, on Tuesday's The Situation Room, touted a July 25 CNN poll showing that 57 percent of Americans believe Bush and the Republicans are more to blame than Obama and the Democrats for the current economic troubles. She added that the Obama White House could credibly use that... continue reading
Citing a Daily Beast piece linking GOP candidates Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry to a radical Christian strain called "Dominionism," CNN's Jack Cafferty fretted about a possible Christian theocracy in America on Wednesday's Cafferty File. "I got to reading this piece, and it scared the hell out of me," Cafferty fearfully remarked of the article's conspiratorial claims. "We contacted both campaigns a few hours ago, haven't heard a word back form either one of them." [Video below.] The article was published in the liberal Daily Beast and reported on by NewsBusters on Monday. Cafferty even cited NewsBusters in his brief... continue reading
